UNIT 3: AGE OF REVOLUTIONS

In addition to the ideas that emerged from the Enlightenment, discontent with prevailing economic, political, and social conditions were the impetus for change.  In this unit students will discuss the conditions that led to revolution, specifically the French Revolution, and paved the way for the modern nation state.  Beyond the French Revolution, this unit will also cover the Age of Napoleon and the Industrial Revolution.

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS

  • What is the role of government?

  • On what basis should subjects obey their rulers?

  • What drives revolution?

  • Are revolutions truly revolutionary or evolutionary?

  • Does the end justify the means?

  • Is violence a necessary step in the revolutionary process?

  • What is a successful revolution?
