Sport can create hope where once there was only despair. It is more powerful than government in breaking down racial barriers.

COURSE RATIONALE
This course examines the relationship between sports and American culture. Beginning with the history and evolution of sports in America, we will see how sports has served as a reflection of our social, political, and economic makeup. In addition, this course will examine how sports have helped drive major changes in societal attitudes toward race, gender, and sexuality. “Sports and American Culture” will also explore current issues in sports including paying collegiate athletes to play.
